Vionnet Resort 2014 collection is full of outgoing personality and flair. Creative director Goga Ashkenazi successfully intertwines delicate silhouettes with sexy cutting. It stays true to Madeline Vionnet’s original techniques of bias cutting and signature draping, by putting a modern spin on the legend’s aesthetic. Not only do these clothes flatter the body beautifully, they light up the wearer.
The colors are rich and bold. Even the white pieces are crisp and glorious, the brightest white we’ve seen. There’s an asymmetrical feel on the skirts, while the pants taper and cover the feet dramatically. Cut-out backs add a little edgy sex-appeal. Art deco designs create a peek-a-boo effect on several dresses, a jacket and trench coat. The sheer lace tulle technique looks futuristically glam on the kimono sleeves and tunic dresses throughout. There’s even nods to 1940s bathing suits in the undergarments covered under these sheer styles. The show-stopping pieces are the assortment of gorgeous evening gowns. The buttery yellow number glistens, while the white gowns look angelic. Every piece lays so perfectly. There’s a sleek rhythm and flow while these looks fit the model like a luxurious silk glove.
She used this in several ways, from a striking print on a belted cotton top and a bias-cut dress to a leather intarsia on a ponyskin cape. Elsewhere, Ashkenazi played with surface details by embellishing a pair of flared pants with hand-painted plastic petals.
